The Met: Policing London

In 2018 the highest number of under 25's are killed in London in over a decade. This film follows the investigation into two of these killings in the borough of Haringey, North London. The first is the murder of 22 year-old Kobi Nelson from Tottenham, who was violently stabbed 14 times near his home and died at the scene. The case is picked up by DCI Luke Marks from the Murder Investigation Team. Kobi was well known in the community through his work as a youth worker and detectives believe he was murdered in a random attack. At the crime scene, two cars are taken for urgent forensic examination. It's understood that one of the vehicles deliberately crashed into Kobi Nelson's car. Eyewitness accounts claim a group of men then got out of the suspects' car and carried out a ferocious attack on Kobi. The forensic examination of the driver's air bag in the suspects' vehicle gives the detectives their first lead, DNA identifies a 20 year old known gang member from Wood Green. Wood Green and Tottenham are just two miles apart in the borough of Haringey. The detectives believe a feud between gangs in Tottenham and Wood Green over drug dealing territories has spiralled into tit for tat attacks based on the areas they live in. This attack is one in a long list of violent offences between the gangs as Haringey sees knife crime rise by 90%. As a teenager Kobi had connections with the Tottenham gang and the detectives wonder if he has been targeted because of his historic associations. Less than 5 weeks after Kobi's murder, 19 year-old Kelvin Odunuyi is shot dead at the cinema in Wood Green. Kelvin was privately educated in a school in Leeds and was a good student. His mother noticed a change in his behaviour when the family moved to Wood Green and she believes he was groomed by gangs in the area. The case is handed to DCI Luke Marks and his team. One theory is that Kelvin's murder is the next killing in the feud between the Tottenham and Wood Green gangs, a direct retaliation for the murder of Kobi Nelson. The Met are under pressure to halt the escalating murder rate, and with tensions high in the borough, the detectives are alive to the fact that further retaliation killings are a real possibility. Less than two months after Kobi's death, violence in Tottenham hits the national news when 17-year-old Tanesha Melbourne-Blake is gunned down on the street. In the first 100 days of 2018, the number of people killed has doubled compared to the previous year. After a series of damming headlines, the Met are under pressure to stop the surge in violence and call a press conference to announce the launch of a new Violent Crime Task Force. As Kobi's mother makes preparations to bury her son, tensions in the borough remain high. The police are concerned that the funeral will be used by gang members from Wood Green and Tottenham to settle scores. Extra plain clothed and uniformed officers are deployed on the streets to ensure there are no more killings.
